What is wisdom tooth excision/extraction?
Wisdom tooth excision/extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth, which are the four permanent adult teeth (otherwise known as molars) located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom.
Why do you need wisdom tooth excision/extraction?
If your wisdom tooth does not have room to grow, or is what we call an impacted wisdom tooth, it can result in pain, infection or gum disease, or other dental problems. That is likely when you will need to undergo wisdom tooth excision/extraction.
What can you expect when undergoing wisdom tooth excision/extraction?
During Wisdom Tooth Excision/Extraction
You will likely be under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the wisdom tooth excision/extraction and your comfort level.
During the wisdom tooth excision/extraction, your dentist will make an incision in your gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. Thereafter, your dentist will remove the bone blocking access to the tooth root and remove the tooth.
The incision site may be stitched close and a gauze will be placed over the site to control bleeding.
After Wisdom Tooth Excision/Extraction
You will experience bleeding from the incision site after your wisdom tooth excision/extraction – replace the gauze as necessary based on the instructions provided by your dentist. You may also experience swelling of your cheeks which should go away after two to three days with usage of an ice pack. Pain medication may be prescribed for pain management.
You will be advised to only consume soft foods for the first 24 hours and to not brush your teeth, rinse your mouth, spit or use mouthwash during the first 24 hours after the procedure.
