What is removal of non-cancerous moles?

Moles are common harmless skin growths that occur due to the accumulation of pigment cells in the skin. If you notice the following signs (ABCDs), you should get your mole reviewed by a dermatologist:

Your moles:

  • are asymmetrical
  • have irregular borders
  • are not uniform in color
  • have a diameter that’s larger than a pencil eraser
  • are evolving or changing in size, shape, or color

Why do you need removal of non-cancerous moles?

Unless a mole is cancerous, you would not need to have it removed. However, if you feel that it affects your appearance or if it is rubbing against your clothes, you have the choice of removing the mole.

What can you expect when undergoing removal of non-cancerous moles?

During Removal of Non-Cancerous Moles

Depending on the type of mole you have, your doctor will recommend various mole removal methods.

For smaller, flatter moles, freezing, burning or laser removal may be recommended:

  • Freezing – a small amount of liquid nitrogen is used
  • Burning – an electric current is used to burn off the upper layers of a noncancerous mole. It may take more than one session to complete the mole removal
  • Laser Removal – a device that gives off laser light is used to remove moles

For larger, more protruding moles, either shaving or excision may be recommended:

  • Shaving – a surgical blade is used to shave the mole off the skin’s surface
  • Excision – the entire mole is excised and your skin stitched back together. This type of removal is typically used if the mole is cancerous

After Removal of Non-Cancerous Moles

If necessary, your doctor can evaluate the mole that has been removed for skin cancer.
