What is knee arthroscopy and lateral release surgery?
Knee arthroscopy and lateral release surgery is a surgical procedure to relieve pain from a partially dislocated kneecap, by realigning the kneecap.
Why do you need knee arthroscopy and lateral release surgery?
If you have partially dislocated your kneecap and have tried non-surgical treatment methods such as braces, crutches, knee braces, ice packs and physical therapy but have not experienced any relief from pain, your doctor might recommend knee arthroscopy and lateral release surgery.
What can you expect when undergoing knee arthroscopy and lateral release surgery?
Preparing for Knee Arthroscopy and Lateral Release
During consultation, your surgeon might decide you may need certain tests to determine if you are healthy enough for surgery – these tests can include blood tests, an electrocardiogram or a chest X-ray. You will be under general anaesthesia.
During Knee Arthroscopy and Lateral Release Surgery
A knee arthroscopy will need to happen first. During a knee arthroscopy, your surgeon makes a few incisions in your knee and fills your knee joint with a sterile fluid. This fluid helps with controlling minor bleeding within the joint and can help wash away debris to better assist your surgeon in seeing inside your knee joint.
An arthroscope, a thin tube with a small light and video camera at its end, is inserted into the incision and images from inside your knee will be projected onto a monitor.
Your surgeon will cut through the tendons in your kneecap and release enough of the retinaculum (band of thickened deep fascia around your tendons to keep them in place) to allow your kneecap to move into the proper groove, restoring normal alignment and enabling movement. Your knee movement will be tested to ensure the kneecap is in the correct location before your surgeon stitches up the incisions and covers your knee with a bandage.
After Knee Arthroscopy and Lateral Release Surgery
Experiencing pain after your surgery and for weeks after is normal. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications to help you manage the pain.
Your surgeon will place a pad around the outside of your knee to keep your kneecap in position. You may also be given a knee brace to prevent your knee from moving outwards.
While you might be able to resume normal physical activities around three months after your surgery, it may take as long as a year for you to fully recover.
