What is evacuation of the uterus?

An evacuation of the uterus, also known as a D&C, is a surgical procedure to remove pregnancy tissue from the uterus.

Why do you need evacuation of the uterus?

This is in the instance of a miscarriage where the miscarriage is unlikely to resolve without intervention. Some women also prefer for the pregnancy tissue to be removed through an evacuation of the uterus rather than wait for it to be expelled naturally.

What can you expect when undergoing evacuation of the uterus?

Preparing for Evacuation of the Uterus

You will be required to fast for 6 hours prior to the procedure. You may also be given a tablet to be inserted into the vagina that helps soften your cervix, enabling the evacuation of the uterus to be performed more smoothly.

During Evacuation of the Uterus

You will be under general anaesthesia during the procedure and placed in a position where your legs will be in stirrups. Your doctor will grasp your cervix, gently stretch the opening and pass a suction tube into the cavity of your womb.

Suction is applied and the pregnancy tissue from the womb is gently removed. The cavity of the womb will be gently scraped to ensure the womb is completely emptied.

After Evacuation of the Uterus

You might experience bleeding after the procedure. You are recommended to refrain from sexual intercourse or inserting tampons into your vagina for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. Swimming is not recommended. You may be prescribed antibiotics and you will be recommended to finish the prescribed dosage.
