What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, which is also known as augmentation mammography, breast implants or a ‘boob job’, is a surgery to increase one’s breast size. The enhancement can be done using silicone or saline implants, as well as through fat-grafting.
Why do you need breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation can help with enhancing your appearance if you have lost fullness in your breasts after pregnancy or breastfeeding, are experiencing asymmetry of your breasts, or if you desire more volume in your breasts.
What can you expect when undergoing breast augmentation?
Preparing for Breast Augmentation
Prior to breast augmentation surgery, you will meet with your surgeon for a medical evaluation. You can talk about your desired look and get feedback from your surgeon.
The surgery can be done as an outpatient procedure and takes between 1 to 2 hours.
During Breast Augmentation
Your surgeon will make an incision in either of the following places in order to insert the breast implant:
- The crease under your breast
- Under your arm
- Around your nipple
Thereafter, your breast tissue will be separated from the muscles and connective tissue of your chest. This creates a pocket and your surgeon will decide the type of pocket to place the implant depending on a variety of factors.
When the implant is in place, your surgeon will close the incision with stitches and bandage it with skin adhesive and surgical tape.
After Breast Augmentation
Soreness and swelling can be expected for a few weeks after surgery, with the possibility of bruising. Pain medication will be prescribed by your surgeon.
You will be asked to wear a compression bandage or a sports bra to aid with supporting and positioning the breast implants.
If sutures were used and they don’t absorb on their own, you will have to return to your surgeon for a follow-up appointment for removal.
