What is hand and wrist synovectomy?

Hand and wrist synovectomy is a surgical procedure to remove inflamed tissue lining the hand and wrist joints. This is in early cases of inflammatory arthritis where there is significant swelling causing pain or limiting the range of motion of digits and thumb. The procedure may be performed using arthroscopy, where an arthroscope, a thin tube with a small light and video camera at its end, is inserted into incisions the surgeon makes on your hand/wrist. Images from inside the hand and wrist will then be projected onto a monitor.

Why do you need hand and wrist synovectomy?

Hand and wrist synovectomy can help prolong the function of your hand and wrist joints, and relieve pain caused by arthritis. Inflamed tissue can also push the joints of your hands and wrists out of position – hand and wrist synovectomy can improve how your hand or wrist looks.

What can you expect when undergoing hand and wrist synovectomy?

During Hand and Wrist Synovectomy

An arthroscopy will need to happen during hand and wrist synovectomy. During the arthroscopy, your surgeon makes an incision in your hand and wrist.

An arthroscope, a thin tube with a small light and video camera at its end, is inserted into the incision and images from inside your hand/wrist will be projected onto a monitor.

If the inflamed tissue (synovium) is of a small amount, your surgeon will perform a partial synovectomy. During a complete synovectomy, all of the inflamed tissue (synovium) will be cut out.

After Hand and Wrist Synovectomy

Stiffness and swelling can be expected after hand and wrist synovectomy. Physical therapy and rehabilitation can help with relaxing and flexing your hand and wrist joint post surgery.
