What is myringoplasty?

A myringoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair a hole (perforation) in your eardrum.

The hole or perforation could be caused by an infection that bursts through your eardrum or by trauma.

A perforated eardrum can lead to repeated ear infections and poorer hearing.

Why do you need myringoplasty?

After undergoing myringoplasty, you should have less risk of repeated ear infections and your hearing may improve.

What can you expect when undergoing myringoplasty?

During Myringoplasty

Your surgeon will make an incision behind your ear or through the ear canal, depending on the size and location of the perforation. A graft (piece of tissue) will be placed to cover the hole and it will be supported with a dissolving sponge. The incision is closed with sutures and a bandage will be applied to the outside of the ear to protect your ear canal.

After Myringoplasty

The bandage can be removed after three to four hours and normal daily activities can resume after a few days. Swimming should be avoided until the perforation has completely healed.
