What is chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation, otherwise known as chin enhancement surgery or genioplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the contours of the chin, neck and jawline. This involves the placement of a fitted implant around one’s existing chin bone to augment the size and shape of the chin.

Why do you need chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation surgery can help:

  • Improve facial harmony by bringing the chin into better proportion with other features
  • Correct a weak or recessed chin
  • Improve definition of the neck and jawline
  • Reduce the appearance of a full or double chin caused by a small chin bone

What can you expect when undergoing chin augmentation?

Before Chin Augmentation

You will be under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation depending on your suitability. Chin implant surgery is usually an outpatient procedure and takes less than 1 hour.

During Chin Augmentation

Your surgeon will make a small incision either underneath your chin or inside your mouth. Through this incision, your surgeon inserts the chin implant and fits it around your chin bone. The incision is then stitched close with sutures and your chin bandaged.

After Chin Augmentation

You can resume your daily activities within seven days after surgery. Pain is minimal and can be managed with painkillers and swelling with cold compresses. You may be required to consume only liquids for 1-2 days after surgery.

You will be encouraged to sleep face-up, with your head elevated, for a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks after surgery to help control swelling and protect your healing incisions.
