What is abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

An abdominoplasty, also commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic, surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens muscles in your abdominal wall. This flattens and tones the appearance of your tummy, and can help remove and improve the appearance of stretch marks. Abdominoplasty is often combined with liposuction of other areas.

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure takes approximately 3 hours.

Why do you need an abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

If you have loose, excess skin and fat after several pregnancies, you can consider an abdominoplasty to tighten your muscles and reduce the excess skin.

For men and women who have lost a significant amount of weight but still possess excessive fat deposits or loose skin in your abdominal area, you may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty too.

While an abdominoplasty is permanent, fluctuations in your weight can diminish its effect – so if you are a woman who is still planning to have children or if you are still planning to lose a significant amount of weight, you may wish to postpone the abdominoplasty until your weight has stabilised.

What can you expect when undergoing abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

Preparing for Abdominoplasty

Depending on the type of abdominoplasty you choose to undergo, the procedure will vary slightly.

  • Complete abdominoplasty: Your plastic surgeon will cut your abdomen from hipbone to hipbone and contour your skin, tissue, and muscle. The procedure will involve moving your belly button, and you may need drainage tubes under your skin for a few days.
  • Partial or mini abdominoplasty: Partial or mini-abdominoplasties are usually done on people whose fat deposits are located below the navel. As such, the plastic surgeon will most likely not move your belly button and the procedure will take a shorter duration of time compared to a complete abdominoplasty.

During Abdominoplasty

Your plastic surgeon will cut or make incisions on your abdomen to remove most of the skin and fat between your belly button and pubic hair in a horizontal oval or elliptical shape. Connective tissue that lies over the abdominal muscles is then tightened with permanent sutures.

Depending on the amount of excess skin removed and the type of procedure you have, the shape and length of the incision will vary. There will be a scar left behind that falls along the natural crease within the bikini line. The skin around your belly button will also be repositioned.

After Abdominoplasty

You will experience pain and swelling after the procedure. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications as needed. You will also experience soreness that may last for several weeks. Numbness, bruising and tiredness are also common effects experienced.

An abdominoplasty leaves scars that may fade slightly over time but will never completely disappear. Your surgeon may recommend certain creams or ointments to use to help with the healing.
