What is a neck lift?

A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve signs of aging in your jawline and neck. The surgery involves removing excess skin and fat from your neck.

These signs of aging can include:

  • Jowls (or excess fat and skin on your lower jawline)
  • Excess fatty deposits under the chin
  • Loose neck skin
  • Muscle banding in the neck

Why do you need a neck lift?

A neck lift can help give you a smoother, tighter and slimmer profile (how you look from the side) and can help enhance chin and jawline definition.

What can you expect when undergoing a neck lift?

Preparing for a Neck Lift

During the consultation with your surgeon, it is important to discuss your goals and expectations for the neck lift surgery and what the surgery can and cannot address. Your surgeon might suggest additional surgeries such as a facelift, brow lift, eyelid ptosis correction that can help contribute to the results you desire.

Your surgeon will be taking photos of your face to compare your appearance before and after surgery and to help narrow down the best options for your neck lift surgery.

During a Neck Lift

A neck lift can be done with sedation and local anesthesia, in which only part of your body feels numb, or under general anesthesia.

Depending on the amount of fatty excess on your neck, your surgeon might either use liposuction alone or opt for surgery through incisions.

For liposuction alone, the surgeon will make a tiny incision behind each of your ear and under your chin. Fat from your jawline and beneath the chin will be suctioned out.

For surgery through incisions, your surgeon will remove extra skin and fat through the incisions, and tighten the underlying muscle layer. The incisions will be closed with sutures and a small drainage tube will be placed to drain excess fluid after surgery.

After a Neck Lift

After neck lift surgery, you will experience pain swelling, bruising, and neck tightness. Your surgeon will prescribe painkillers and antibiotics to control the pain and minimise risk of infection.

You will need to wear a compression garment to help compress your neck and reduce swelling. Keep your head elevated above your chest and this will help the swelling to settle faster.

You will need to return to your surgeon to remove the sutures 5 to 10 days after surgery.
