What is Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injection?

Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injection is a non-surgical treatment method for osteoarthritis in the knee, hip, elbow, or shoulder, designed to slow the progression of cartilage degradation and joint destruction. It is a protein injection harvested from the patient’s blood.

Osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition that can affect your basic quality of life, daily function, and personal happiness, and is characterised by an increased number of catabolic, pro-inflammatory cytokines in the joint. When they are not balanced by anti-inflammatory cytokines, the catabolic cytokines contribute to cartilage breakdown. As cartilage degrades, the joint becomes increasingly arthritic and symptoms (generally pain, stiffness, and swelling) increase.

Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injections work by targeting the cytokine imbalance with a concentration of anti-inflammatory cytokines and anabolic growth factors. This concentration is injected directly at the site of the joint injury and spurs regenerative healing.

Why do you need Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injection?

For patients who suffer from mild to moderate osteoarthritis and prefer non-surgical treatment methods, Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injections are a good alternative. While the treatment does not cure osteoarthritis, it can help to manage the symptoms by reducing pain and increasing mobility and comfort.

What can you expect when undergoing Autologous Protein Solution (APS) injection?

During Autologous Protein Solution (APS) Injection

Autologous Protein Solution (APS) processes your blood to concentrate white blood cells, platelets and plasma proteins into a small volume of plasma. During the treatment, a small sample of your blood is taken and put in a centrifugal device twice to separate out the “good” proteins. These are then injected into the affected joint.

After Autologous Protein Solution (APS) Injection

You will normally start to feel a reduction in pain after a week and the treatment can remain effective for 2-3 years.
