What is elbow reconstruction surgery?

Elbow reconstruction surgery is a surgical procedure to restore the function of the arm elbow due to overuse injury, repetitive stress or a direct injury. Symptoms of injury to the elbow joint include swelling and pain.

Why do you need elbow reconstruction surgery?

Swelling and pain in the elbow joint can affect both function and appearance of the elbow. Elbow reconstruction injury can help alleviate the pain experienced.

What can you expect when undergoing elbow reconstruction surgery?

During Elbow Reconstruction Surgery

There are two types of elbow reconstruction surgery:

  • Tendon repair – your surgeon can opt to either perform tendon debridement (removal of damaged tissue from the tendon on the elbow) or tendon release (splitting the damaged tendon on the elbow and removing scar tissue or overgrowth around the tendon)
  • Ligament reconstruction – this is for patients with ligament rupture. Your surgeon will make an incision over the elbow and harvest donor tendon from your forearm or below the knee. Holes are drilled into the bones of the upper arm and the forearm around the elbow joint. Your surgeon will then insert the donor tendon through the drilled holes and the tendon is attached to the bone surfaces with special sutures. The incision is closed with sutures.

After Elbow Reconstruction Surgery

The incision which has been stitched close will be covered with sterile dressings. A splint will be applied to support your elbow for a few weeks. Your surgeon may recommend ice therapy and rehabilitation therapy to reduce pain, swelling or muscle spasm.
