What is eyelid ptosis correction?

Eyelid ptosis, otherwise known as droopy eyelids, is a medical condition where your upper eyelid droops and can obstruct your vision. Eyelid ptosis is typically caused by ageing (acquired ptosis) or can be a congenital condition.

The type of eyelid ptosis correction depends on how the ptosis has been graded.

For mild eyelid ptosis, correction can be performed with a scarless, suture technique.

For moderate to severe eyelid ptosis, ptosis surgery will be required.

Why do you need eyelid ptosis correction?

Patients with ptosis often complain that the droopy lids make them look tired, unwell or inattentive. They often raise their eyebrows to compensate for their drooping eyelids which can lead to headaches, forehead lines and fatigue.

After eyelid ptosis correction, patients usually report things looking “brighter” because there is a greater visual field.

Headaches are also resolved because of a reduction in strain, with their forehead lines improving and their eyebrows returning to a rested, natural position.

Appearance-wise, patients appear more awake with larger and more attractive-looking eyes. Double eyelid creases can also appear more defined.

What can you expect when undergoing eyelid ptosis correction?

Preparing for Eyelid Ptosis Correction

Your surgeon will measure the marginal reflex distance – this is the distance from your pupil’s centre and to the upper eyelid. Should the distance be below a certain level, ptosis correction is required.

During Eyelid Ptosis Correction

You will be put under local anesthesia. Your surgeon will make an incision along your natural double eyelid crease. If you do not have an existing double eyelid crease, the incision will be made along a selected double eyelid crease. Excess fat or skin is removed at this stage. The surgeon will then manipulate the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid through a levator application technique.

After Eyelid Ptosis Correction

After eyelid ptosis correction surgery, you can expect bruising and swelling – bruising can take between 7 to 10 days to resolve while swelling can range from 14 to 90 days to fully resolve depending on the age of the patient.

One week of medical leave is sufficient for the majority of patients and they can return to work after.

Lubricating ointments and/or drops may be provided to prevent dryness of the eye.

Your skin stitches will be removed by your surgeon between Day 5 to Day 7 of the surgery.
