What is droopy eyelid surgery?

Droopy eyelid surgery, otherwise known as an eye lift, is a procedure that alters the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It removes excess skin from the upper eyelids and reduces bagginess from the lower eyelids. The goal is to make your eyes appear younger, more alert, and also to improve vision that could have been obscured by drooping eyelids.

Why do you need droopy eyelid surgery?

As we age, our skin loses its elasticity. This can cause excess skin to collect both on the lower eyelids and upper eyelids. Excess skin on the lower eyelid causes wrinkles and bulges, while excess skin on the upper eyelid can obscure your vision. Droopy eyelid surgery can improve your appearance and sight.

What can you expect when undergoing droopy eyelid surgery?

During Droopy Eyelid Surgery

You will likely be under local anesthesia with sedation when you undergo droopy eyelid surgery.

For your upper eyelids, your doctor will cut along the natural lines of your lids, separating the skin from the underlying tissue and removing excess fat and skin. These cuts will be stitched together.

For your lower eyelids, there are two techniques that your surgeon may use. One involves cutting inside your lower eyelid to remove fat – the cut will not be visible. The other technique involves making a cut along the eyelash margin to remove excess skin, loose muscle and fat – the cut line will fade over time.

After Droopy Eyelid Surgery

It is normal to experience swelling and bruising but these should fade between 7 to 14 days after droopy eyelid surgery. You can apply a cold compress on your eyes and sleep with your head raised to help reduce the swelling and bruising.
