What is removal of skin lesions?

Removal of skin lesions is a procedure to remove growths on your skin. A skin lesion is a part of the skin that looks abnormal compared to the skin around it. Skin lesions can be primary or secondary. Primary skin lesions are abnormal skin conditions that are present at birth or acquired over a lifetime. Secondary skin lesions are due to irritated primary skin lesions such as scratching a mole until it bleeds and develops a crust.

What can you expect when undergoing removal of skin lesions?

You will be under local anaesthesia. The type of removal will depend on the size and type of the lesion. Your doctor can remove your skin lesion in a variety of ways: 

  • Biopsy – A small part of the lesion is cut out or shaved down. Your doctor then examines the sample to determine if there are any cancer cells
  • Excision – The entire lesion, and often, some of the area around it, is cut out
  • Cryosurgery – A very cold liquid or special tool to freeze and destroy skin cells is used to remove the lesion
  • Curettage – A special tool is used to scrape away parts of your lesion
  • Electrocautery – A device that gives off an electrical current to destroy, burn, or cut out skin cells is used to remove the lesion
  • Laser surgery – A device that gives off laser light to destroy skin lesions is used

Your wound may be stitched closed. In the occasion that a scar is left behind, it should fade away with time.
