What is a wrist implant?

A wrist implant, otherwise known as wrist replacement surgery or wrist arthroplasty, involves the replacement of a damaged wrist joint with an artificial joint made of metal and plastic components.

Why do you need a wrist implant?

The typical candidate for a wrist implant suffers from either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, making the wrist joint painful, stiff, and swollen. When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, your surgeon may recommend a wrist implant to relieve pain and restore function in your wrist.

What can you expect when undergoing a wrist implant?

During a Wrist Implant

Your surgeon will make an incision on the top of your wrist, following which your affected joint will be removed and damaged cartilage and bone cut away. The artificial joint is inserted and attached to the bones on each side with pins, screws or bone cement. Your surgeon will then test that the joint moves, and the surrounding tendons and nerves are in place. The incision is closed with stitches and your wrist will be put in a cast and wrapped with sterile bandages.

After a Wrist Implant

After a wrist implant surgery, you will need to wear a cast for between two to three weeks and a splint after. Hand therapy will also need to take place to help you resume motion in your wrist. You will usually regain a motion of 60 to 70 degrees, which is considered a functional arc and sufficient for you to carry out your daily living activities.
