What is septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum. The septum is the wall of bone and cartilage in your nose that divides it into two separate nostrils. A deviated septum is when your septum is moved to one side of your nose, causing one nasal passage that is smaller than the other – this can result in difficulty breathing.

Why do you need septoplasty?

A septoplasty straightens a deviated septum, allowing for better airflow through your nose and helping reduce any difficulty in breathing.

What can you expect when undergoing septoplasty?

During Septoplasty

During a septoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision on one side of your nose to access the deviated septum. The mucous membrane, which is the protective covering of your septum, will be lifted and the deviated septum will be adjusted into the right position. If there are extra pieces of bone or cartilage, your surgeon will remove those. The mucous membrane will then be repositioned.

Your surgeon will stitch the repositioned septum and mucous membrane in place. The entire procedure will take approximately between 30 to 90 minutes.

After Septoplasty

It is normal to experience swelling and pain in your nose after the septoplasty. Your surgeon will pack your nose with cotton to control bleeding, and the cotton can be removed 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Pain medication will also be prescribed.

You will likely be asked to restrain from intense physical activity for several weeks after surgery – these activities can increase your blood pressure and cause heavy bleeding.
