What is eyebag removal?

Eyebag removal surgery, also known as lower lid blepharoplasty, is a procedure to improve and correct loose skin, excess fat and wrinkles of the undereye area.

As one ages, your skin loses elasticity and fat padding. The tissues around your eyes and some of the muscles supporting your eyelids may also weaken. This can make the lower eyelid appear puffy, wrinkled and baggy. Fluid also may accumulate in the space below your eyes, adding to the swelling. Other causes of eyebags include lack of sleep, allergies, smoking and hereditary reasons.

Why do you need eyebag removal surgery?

People with eyebags can often look tired and listless. Eyebag removal surgery can make the undereye smoother, creating a more youthful, rejuvenated look.

What can you expect when undergoing eyebag removal surgery?

Preparing for Eyebag Removal

During the consultation with your surgeon and prior to the surgery, markings on your eyelids will be made – this helps the surgeon know where to make the incisions.

During Eyebag Removal

Your surgeon will make cuts into your lower eyelid, remove the excess skin and fat, then suture the skin back together.

For hollow areas under the eyes, your surgeon may also recommend fat grafting or injections to give them a fuller appearance.

The procedure may be performed under local or general anesthesia, and generally lasts between 1 to 3 hours.

After Eyebag Removal

Bruising, bleeding and soreness are common side effects after eyebag removal surgery. You will need to apply a cold compress routinely for 48 hours after surgery to help with the swelling.

You will also be prescribed ointments and eye drops to prevent infections. The swelling and bruising should decrease significantly after 10 to 14 days.
