What is removal of breast implants?
Breast implant removal is surgery to take out breast implants from breast augmentation or breast reconstruction patients.
Women who have had breast augmentation surgery will eventually need another breast implant revision procedure. These procedures include:
- Removing the implants and replacing them with new implants
- Repositioning the existing implants
- Removing the breast implants without replacement
Why do you need removal of breast implants?
Here are some reasons why breast implants would need to be removed:
- Leaking of the breast implant
- Shifting or movement of the breast implant
- Build-up of calcium deposits around the implant
- Infection and/or bleeding
- Necrosis or development of dead tissues around the breast implant
- Breasts have changed over time due to age, pregnancy and breastfeeding, leading to the look of the implants being affected
- You no longer want your implants
What can you expect when undergoing removal of breast implants?
Preparing for Removal of Breast Implants
Before breast implant removal surgery, you will be placed under general anaesthesia or sedation. Breast implant removal surgery is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home on the day of the surgery.
During Removal of Breast Implants
Your surgeon will make an incision around the circle of darker skin around your nipple (areola) or under the lower fold of your breasts (inframammary fold). There are two different ways to remove your implants:
- Your surgeon removes only the implant
- Your surgeon removes the implant and part or all of the capsule, or layer of scar tissue, that naturally forms around the breast implant inside your body
The incision will be closed using adhesives, stitches, or clips.
After Removal of Breast Implants
Surgical drains will be placed at the incision sites to help prevent the buildup of excess fluid, and will be kept there for one to three weeks, or until the total daily fluid output from your incision sites measures less than 20-30 cc (cubic centimeters). A surgical bra (no seams or wires) is advised to be worn day and night to help you heal and provide support.
