What is K-wire fixation?

A Kirschner wire, also known as a K-wire, is a thin metallic wire or pin that is often used in bone operations to hold broken bones together. They can be placed percutaneously (through the skin) or can be buried beneath the skin.

Why do you need K-wire fixation?

Most hand fractures generally heal by themselves given time and the appropriate exercises. However, if the bones are very badly out of position, the hand or finger may not work so well if the bones are left to heal where they are. This is where K-wire fixation is used to fix and hold the bones in position.

What can you expect when undergoing K-wire fixation?

During K-Wire Fixation

When the K-wire has been inserted into your skin, it might be sticking out but will be covered by a dressing and padded bandage with a splint. Your doctor will prescribe painkillers to help you manage your pain.

After K-Wire Fixation

You are highly encouraged to keep the dressing clean and dry, and your arm elevated in a sling or on a pillow to reduce swelling. You will need to go back for a follow-up appointment to check on your K-wire and for a dressing change, in addition to a new splint or plaster.

Four weeks after k-wire fixation, you will be able to have your wire removed. An x-ray will be performed after the wire removal to check on the position of your bone fragments, and further rehabilitation might be recommended by your doctor.

Why choose Novena Surgery for K-wire fixation?

Post-procedure, patients can choose to recover in one of Novena Surgery’s comfortable private suites, or in our 12-bed recovery unit under the care of well-trained nursing staff.
