What is a tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove your tonsils. Your tonsils are two small glands located in the back of your throat.

Why do you need a tonsillectomy?

You may consider undergoing a tonsillectomy if you suffer from breathing difficulties especially sleep (also known as sleep apnoea). You may also be a good candidate for tonsillectomy if you suffer from tonsillitis (infected tonsils) frequently.

What can you expect when undergoing a tonsillectomy?

During a Tonsillectomy

There are two common surgical methods utilised during tonsillectomy:

  • Cold knife (steel) dissection: your surgeon removes your tonsils with a scalpel
  • Cauterisation: Your surgeon burns away the tissues

Tonsillectomies usually take about 30 minutes and you will be under general anaesthesia.

After a Tonsillectomy

It is normal to feel pain after surgery and it may worsen three to four days after the procedure. The pain may last up to 2 weeks and your surgeon may prescribe pain medications to help you manage the pain.

Ensure you drink plenty of fluids and you may want to consider eating soft foods for about a week after your tonsillectomy.
