What is hysteroscopic resection?

Hysteroscopic resection, otherwise known as Transcervical Resection of Fibroids (TCRF), is a procedure to remove fibroids in the uterus using a hysteroscope.

Why do you need hysteroscopic resection?

If the fibroids in your uterus are causing the following symptoms, you may wish to consider hysteroscopic resection:

  • heavy menstrual bleeding
  • bleeding between periods
  • pain or pressure in your lower belly
  • frequent urination
  • trouble emptying your bladder

As fibroids may increase your risk of having a miscarriage or complications during pregnancy, you might want to consider undergoing a hysteroscopy resection if you wish to get pregnant.

What can you expect when undergoing hysteroscopic resection?

Preparing for Hysteroscopic Resection

You will be scheduled to undergo a hysteroscopic resection after your period and before your ovulation.

During Hysteroscopic Resection

Your cervix will be dilated and widened to allow your doctor to insert the hysteroscope through your vagina and cervix into your uterus.

Carbon dioxide gas or a liquid solution will then be inserted into the uterus through the hysteroscope to expand the uterus for better viewing and to clear away any blood or mucus.

A small cutting device is then inserted through the hysteroscopy and the fibroid is removed in small fragments.

After Hysteroscopic Resection

After the hysteroscopic resection, you may experience gas in your digestive tract from the carbon dioxide gas used during the procedure. This can last for 24 hours. You may also experience some cramping or slight vaginal bleeding that should go away after 48 hours.
